If there’s one thing I dislike about Apple it is possessiveness. Mine mine mine! And now they’ve filed to trademark the phrase ‘app store’. That’s like trying to trademark the phrase ‘toilet’. Or ‘my grandmother’s house’. Just because you said it first.
It’s bad enough that the word ‘app’ which is merely an abbreviation of the word application won over the word ‘nom’ for ADS’s 2010 Word of The Year. I mean it’s totally okay if it was to be said that Apple coined the phrase ‘app store’, if that’s true. But attempting to trademark a phrase that is so generic is just ridiculous. If I was Apple I’ll just be happy that I totally own the power of branding because when people hear the phrase ‘app store’, they would think of Apple first, regardless of how many actual app stores exists out there. And the best part is ‘app store’ not even a brand.
