A fridge of the future that tells you what to cook with your left-overs and automatically re-orders fresh food is being designed in the UK.

The self-cleaning ‘fridge of the future’ will automatically place supermarket home delivery orders when required and move food near its use by date to the front of the shelves.

Researchers hope the fridge could clean itself, cut down on wasted food and offer up recipes – which could be tailored to different countries, cuisines and seasons depending on whether people want to whip up something Italian or fancy a curry.

The fridge will also monitor gases released by degrading foods and push these to the front of its shelves, according to the collaborators.

Here’s how a typical conversation with ITellYouWhatToEat fridge might go.

Fridge : Good evening master. Today’s suggestions will be Chicken Paprika Salad or
Beetroot and Mushroom Risotto.
You : Err, I’m not really hungry. I’d like a beer tho.
Fridge : Sorry, beer is not a valid choice. Would you like Chicken Paprika Salad or
Beetroot and Mushroom Risotto?
You : No really, I just want a can of beer.
Fridge : Sorry, the chicken and beetroot are due to expire soon. Would you like Chicken
Paprika Salad or Beetroot and Mushroom Risotto?
You : Listen. I just want a drink okay? Just get me the beer.
Fridge : Would you like some Beetroot juice?
You : What?! No!
Fridge : Would you like some Chicken juice?
You : Dumb fridge. Give. Me. My. Beer.
Fridge : Sorry, beer is not a valid choice. Would you like Chicken Paprika Salad or
Beetroot and Mushroom Risotto?
You : Ffs! (open fridge and attempt to grab a beer)
Fridge : Can’t touch this! (moves beer to the back of shelf)
You : Oi!
Fridge : (keeps moving beer around)
You : Die!!!! (unplugs fridge)
